ENJOY THIS PREQUEL TO THE TOKYO WHISPERS SERIES

In the Foreign Quarter of Tsukiji, Tokyo, Japan, Victorian England is alive and well. Manners and etiquette are as valuable as gossip and deceit. Men are more rakish than ever – so far from home, societal rules seem to be relaxed. But courting young women still requires a deft hand, a smart wit, and a man with something to offer.

INTERNATIONAL SCANDAL

Intent on being an international journalist of repute, Evelyn Prescott will do what it takes to make her mark.

It doesn’t hurt that her father has built a newspaper empire, but finding a scandal in Japan is no easy task.

As much as she hates to admit it, she is forced to meet with the owner of the Tokyo Daily News, Ned Taylor, also an Englishman.

Ned holds a deep-rooted dislike of Evelyn’s father’s approach to journalism, and Ned, a notorious rake, pushes her to see just how far Evelyn is prepared to go to get her story.

From Reedsy Discovery: “Written as a prequel novelette to her forthcoming Tokyo Whispers series, “Scandals of Tokyo” drops readers into the immigrant quarter of Meiji era Tokyo, with hints of all of the glitz, the temptation, and the salacious gossip one could wish. At just under 30 pages, Hallman has a lot of ground to cover, introducing characters and a world that will be expanded on in future novels, but if “Scandals” is just a taste of this series, then it’s going to be huge.

Lovingly researched and brilliantly detailed, Hallman knows the place and time she’s writing about and it shows! Turn of the century Tokyo is alive and well on her pages and in her characters, and it is certain to delight.”

Tokyo 1896
Foreign Quarter of Tsukiji

Several matrons strolled towards the balustrade, their chatter enveloped in the rustling of silk skirts and clattering of heels against the terrace flagstones. Aunt Prissy warbled an evening greeting to some of them, which they returned in kind. Over the course of their residence at the Hotel Metropolis, she’d become friendly with most of the guests. As the women walked away, Aunt Prissy offered another large yawn from behind her fan.

“Really, you should retire. I’ll stay a bit longer on the terrace. I’m too fidgety to join you.” Evelyn’s gratitude for her aunt’s permissiveness as chaperone had never been greater, but she was determined to speak with a certain charming gentleman this evening, and the conversation would proceed more smoothly if Aunt Prissy wasn’t taking part.

“I perfectly understand, dear Evie. Better you fidget on the terrace. It’s quite windy tonight. Do beware of catching a chill. Shall I bring you a wrap?” Even at the end of August, summer’s heat held Tokyo in its grip. Night brought a modicum of relief, but the breezes off Tokyo Bay remained sultry.

Evelyn declined the offer and kissed Aunt Prissy good night. As the swish of her aunt’s skirts faded, Evelyn contemplated her target.

Ned Taylor was her last hope.

She hadn’t wanted to use the letter she carried, but she’d been in Tokyo for over a month and still didn’t have a scandalous story she could send to Papa. Most of her time had been spent convalescing from a summer malady she’d picked up a few days after arriving and chasing a baroness through the countryside for a scandal-worthy headline. She’d inquired around the foreign quarter as to the reputations of its prominent residents, but all her efforts had amounted to was unsubstantiated rumours and trivial innuendo.

Evelyn had no choice but to present Mr Taylor with a request from her papa he couldn’t ignore.

About the Author:
Heather Hallman writes witty, sensual, contest-winning romances set in Meiji-era Japan (1868-1912). She is the author of the Tokyo Whispers series that includes Scandals of Tokyo and Talk of Tokyo.

She is fluent in Japanese language, history, and culture, and earned a doctoral degree in cultural anthropology based on fieldwork research in Japan. She lives in Tokyo with her professor husband and two young daughters. In her free time, she can be found translating ancient Japanese poetry and observing the passing of seasons while sipping green tea. Just kidding, she has no free time. But she does watch something that makes her laugh while she does the dishes.

Perennial obsessions include the weather forecast (she checks three different apps at least three times a day, as no single app can be trusted), Baltimore Ravens football (hometown obsession), and making smoothies that taste like candy bars.

Feel free to chat her up about any of her obsessions, or, even better, about historical Japan—any era is fine, she loves them all. She also enjoys exchanging book recommendations, discussions about the craft of romance writing, and stories about life in present-day Tokyo.

Blog Tour: Country Hearts by Gisele L Grieves

BookCover_Country Hearts by Gisèle L GrievesTitle: Country Hearts
Author: Gisèle L Grieves
Blurb:

Jenny’s life revolves around three very important things: being a mom, a wife, and a rancher; until one day, the unthinkable happens.

Journey with Jenny as she faces some of the hardest obstacles but also the most incredible moments of her life. Just as she feels her days are at their darkest, a special person comes into her life, and brightens it all up.

Excerpt:

“Jenny!?! Have you seen my keys? I’m gonna be late if I can’t find those blasted keys!”

And so, Monday begins. How is it that one man can lose his keys so often? We have a key holder in the entrance for the express purpose of hanging keys so we’ll know where they are the next time we need them. So why is it, our Mondays always start with David looking for his keys?

“Did you check your coat pockets?” I yell back, from across the house. Let’s see … kids’ lunches are made, their clothes are laid out, David has his lunch … no, wait … Oh goodness, no, he doesn’t. “Your lunch is still on the counter too!” I add. The man drives me absolutely crazy. I swear he is more absent-minded than the kids sometimes.

“Shit,” I hear him utter under his breath.

“I found your keys! They are on the counter next to your lunch.”

David comes running into the kitchen. “Thanks, babe”— he kisses me and runs off—“I’d be lost without you.”

Okay, where was I? Get the kids on the bus, then on to my farm chores … Check on the cows and horses, make sure the water is full, give them another hay bale, oats for the horses, new mineral block needs to go into the corral, collect the eggs, and the chickens may need more feed and water … Get an oil change for the truck at one o’clock, grab some groceries, and be home on time at four o’clock for the bus drop off. All right, Jenny, you got this.

Eseld finished her punch and looked away.

“I was being friendly with the viscount, on a purely decent level, on my part.”

“I’m worried about you. Men can take advantage.

As in being purely mercenary.” Robert’s emotion rose to the surface, rawer than he wished. “I want you to be very cautious.”

“I’m aware of greedy men. And I’m not romantically involved, if that’s what concerns you.” She didn’t sound angry, more a question. A yearning?

“Are you collecting friends or inquiring where you should not?” He toned down his rhetoric, not wishing to upset her.

“That again. You think me foolish, or incapable.”

Her reply was soft despite what she stated. She didn’t deny her motives.

He moved closer. His heartbeat thudded; was she investigating a possible spy as he first surmised?

“You are one of the most capable women I know. Please, confide in me.”

They appeared to still dance around one another—this time with words.

She turned and faced him. “I don’t want us to be at odds.”

She paused for a moment and lightly touched his stock. “Is that all you seek, me to confide? Am I but a contrary girl who must be guided by you?”

“Truthfully, as we were always truthful in our youth, I want to kiss you.”

He cupped her upper arms and couldn’t believe he’d said that aloud. Her jasmine perfume invaded his senses.

“Pardon my boldness. I’m not of your station anymore, am I?”

“That doesn’t matter to me,” she whispered. “But aren’t you still in mourning?”

I was angry at myself for my body’s response that started the minute he walked up in his perfect suit. The return of his devilish grin didn’t improve my disposition. “It’s nothing,” I snapped.

“I’m good at reading people and that expression tells me you have something you’d like to discuss.”

Again, I hushed my voice, but I knew my irritation came across loud and clear. “Keep your voice down, damn it. I don’t need rumors starting from your asinine comments. We’re not going to play this cat and mouse game, Detective O’Connor. I am also good at reading people, that’s why we’re in this job. I’ve been around a few rodeos and met your smooth-talking type. The last one almost got me fired, so let’s establish a few things. I’m not a damsel in distress. I don’t need you to escort me or help me or hit on me or tell me how good I look on any given day. I don’t date cops and I don’t need you in my personal space every time I turn around. Are you picking up what I’m putting down here?”

Blurb Blitz: The Lady and the Texan by Bobbi Smith

BookCover_TheLadyandtheTexanTitle: The Lady and the Texan

Author: Bobbi Smith

Genre: Historical Romance (Sequel to Lady Deception)

Blurb:

The Lady and the Texan

The Lady

A firebrand since the day she was born, Amanda Taylor always stood up for what she believed in. Growing up in Texas, she could ride and shoot with the best of the boys before being sent back East for a more refined education. A firm believer in women’s rights, she was not going to let any man control her—especially a man like the rough-and-ready gunslinger Jack Logan, who had been sent by her father to escort her safely back to Texas.

The Texan

After a deadly run-in with the infamous El Diablo, Jack Logan left the Texas Rangers, no longer able to trust his instincts—or any woman. He knew Dan Taylor’s daughter was trouble, and yet her defiant spirit only spurred his hunger for her. Jack discovered that keeping the dark-haired tigress at bay was a lot harder than outsmarting the outlaws who were after him—and surrendering to the sweet fury in her arms was a heck of a lot riskier.

Excerpt:

Jack Logan was not in the best mood as he stared out the window of his hired carriage. He’d thought it would be simple, traveling to Philadelphia to escort Amanda Taylor back to Texas to her father. He’d made it to the Randall home, but had been informed that Amanda was spending the night at a friend’s home. He’d headed there, only to discover she wasn’t there either. The servant had given him an address where the young women had gone and now as the carriage drew to a stop in front of a bar, Jack shook his head in disbelief. He had no idea what Amanda Taylor would be doing here.

There was a crowd gathered, and he could hear shouts coming the bar. He hurried inside. The sight that greeted him left him stunned. Six axe-wielding women were smashing every table, glass and bottle of liquor in the saloon.

“Down with demon liquor!” one woman shouted.

“What the hell is going on?” the bartender bellowed.

“We are here to save souls!” the women of the temperance movement responded.

Jack pulled out the tintype Dan had given him of Amanda. If one of these battleaxes was Amanda Taylor, he had to get her out of there fast.

The bartender snatched up a bottle of whiskey from the counter when a raven-haired woman confronted him.

“Put that bottle down!” she ordered. “We’re here to destroy this blight upon our land!”

“You swing that axe and I’m sending for the law!”

She did and he did.

“You men! Get the constable!”

Several men bolted out the door to get help.

Jack recognized the woman as Amanda, and he knew he had to make his move now. The last thing he wanted to do was bail her out of jail. True, she was armed and might prove dangerous, but he’d dealt with worse than her before and survived.

“I’ll handle her.” Jack’s tone was so deadly and serious, the bartender stopped his advance.

Amanda lifted her axe again to shatter another bottle, and Jack made his move. He snared her around the waist and jerked her back against him, twisting the weapon out of her grip.

“Unhand me, you fiend!” Amanda cried out in alarm as she found herself pinned against a hard male body in an unyielding grip.

“Shut up!” he ground out, tossing her axe aside.

Amanda fought him with all her might, but his strength was overpowering.

Time was of the essence, so Jack gave up the effort to treat her like a lady. He picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder. She went still, and he smiled grimly as he disappeared out the door with her. He had to get her back to Texas to her father.

“Did you feel that way when I got married? That I was leaving you behind in a way?”

“I was happy for you,” her mother said. “I think most parents are, but time goes by so fast. One moment your kids are babies and the next, they’re graduating and off to college.”

Bianca winced. “Don’t remind me, please.”

“See what I mean?” her mother continued. “Alyssa is not too far behind.”

“And now there’s a boy.”

Her mother grinned. “I see. How’s that going?”

Bianca’s eyes widened slightly. “No ‘she’s too young to be dating’? Isn’t that what you said to me at her age?”

Her mother waved off her question. “I’m the grandmother, so I can spoil her. I was only strict with you and Melanie.”

“Traitor.”

Her mother winked at her.

“Well, I want to meet the boy before she goes out with him.”

Her mother bobbed her head. “Now you remind me of your father. That’s exactly what he said when you told us about your crush on Malcom. He wanted to hire a private investigator.”

Bianca’s mouth fell open. “He didn’t.”

“I stopped him,” her mother said. “After I told him I would keep an eye on you two.”

“I still can’t believe you followed us on our first date.” Bianca ran a finger over her eyebrow.

“It was either him or me.” Her mother paused as her fingers drifted to her now bare ring finger. “Sometimes I can still hear him laughing. Even in my dreams, I can see his face. Hear his voice. To think we almost made forty years.”

Bianca touched her mother’s hand. “I miss him.” There’d been terrible beyond health circumstances. If only his heart had been stronger, but it took him away from the family too soon.

Her mother patted her hand. “Me too.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom are heading out!” the DJ announced through his microphone.

Bianca grabbed her small purse and the small drawstring bag that was filled with birdseed. She smiled, knowing her friend didn’t want the birds to choke on rice. She followed along with her mother as they tossed the birdseed at the couple. The limo waited for them, but Chad kissed Nicole one more time before opening the door. The crowd cheered only louder.

Bianca managed one last glance at Jordan, but he slipped away from the crowd. She didn’t blame him for not staying, but since he was Nicole’s best friend, Bianca knew he would show his support. He’d do anything for Nicole.

Tossing more birdseed, family and friends cheered and whistled at the newlywed couple. Bianca’s chest swelled. Her friend’s bouquet was tucked underneath her arm. Would she get married again? Bianca would think about that later. Right now, she wanted to get out of her five-inch pumps. They’d served their purpose, but she was grateful that she had flats in her car.

Chad opened the door for his new wife, only to hear Nicole’s high-pitched scream. Bianca’s instincts kicked in and she scurried to her friend’s side. Nicole’s face paled. Looking inside the limousine, Bianca spotted someone sitting across from where they stood.

She didn’t hesitate to walk to the other side. Bianca gasped at the sight.

Blog Tour: The Secret of Drulea Cottage by Claire Kohler

BookCover_The Secret of Drulea CottageTitle: The Secret of Drulea Cottage

Author: Claire Kohler

Genre: Historical Fantasy

Blurb:

Briony Fairborn, a midwife in eighteenth-century Scotland, comes from a family shrouded in scandal. Left with only one friend after her mother’s death, she has little hope of gaining any others, let alone finding a husband. Instead, Briony tries to live a quiet life and avoid her neighbors’ ridicule as much as possible.

But things in Everton take a drastic turn when a storm brings foreigners to the village docks.

On the night Santiago Mendes arrives, he comes with a broken ship, a broken leg, and a broken spirit that Briony finds herself profoundly drawn to. Her scarred heart slowly starts to open, and although Briony suspects he may be hiding something, she cannot help but dream of the possibility of love.

That is, until another stranger appears in town, intent on repaying a childhood debt. A dangerously handsome stranger who shows Briony that she’s even more different than she could have imagined. And that her past is far darker than she realized.

Magic, romance, and political intrigue collide as the secrets surrounding one Scottish woman begin to unravel. Secrets that she may not be ready to face.

Excerpt:

Screams drew Briony from her state of shock. They pierced the darkness as terribly as the lightning hitting the ground.

Except ’tis na just hitting the ground anymore! She gasped at the sight of flames rising from the town below. Her neighbors were flying through the streets in a panic, and Briony could see why: the tailor shop and the McGuffs’ house were alight!

Fergus! Briony forgot about Niall and charged down the hill with nary a care for her own well-being. All she could focus on was the thought of the little boy potentially trapped and scared. She reached the burning house and stepped inside. “Hello! Fergus?! Is anyone in here?”

Most of the fire was above her, hungrily swallowing the thatched roof. The smoke was so thick within the confined space that Briony struggled to breathe. Only a few licks of flame had reached the floor, and they were quickly spreading toward the McGuffs’ table.

“H-Here!” came a voice. Whoever it belonged to was too hoarse to identify. Briony covered her mouth with her hand and made her way forward, edging around the blazing table.

Briony hastened into the back bedroom, her eyes flicking between the open window and two beds before landing on their target: Penelope McGuff. The woman was on the ground, facedown. The rest of the family was nowhere in sight.

“Mistress McGuff!” Briony dropped to her knees and grabbed the woman’s hand, but Penelope didn’t stir.

CRASH!

The fact that it is to retrieve a spoiled aristocrat playing at intrigue is of no consequence. Nor is the fact that she beguiles him like no other woman. He has a job to do, and he won’t let anything stand in his way, not even this illogical attraction.

But Juliana might not be imagining the threat. And when it’s her life that’s on the line, Brogan has to decide to what lengths he’ll go to keep her safe. Because in order to resolve this make-or-break case in his career, Brogan might have to hazard more than his heart. And with some gambles, there’s no going back…

Review:
fivestars
Book One in the Agents of Desire series, The Lady Who Knew Too Much puts two headstrong main characters at odds, both of whom have a fiery attraction to the other. I loved the contrasting personalities of Brogan and Juliana, along with the suspense thrown in of trying to find out who is after Juliana’s father. Coupled with steamy interludes, this novel is sure to please historical romance fans who love independent heroines and gruff, muscular heroes.

Excerpt:

She rose and faced her friend’s floor-length mirror. She imagined a tall, burly figure, and dipped a deep curtsy. “Why yes, I would love to dance.”

A hard blue gaze flashed across her imagination. Those eyes belonged to someone completely inappropriate, but this was her fantasy, so she let them linger in her mind. She closed her own eyes and began to sway to the music. She raised her arms, as though holding her imaginary man, and fell into the rhythm of the dance.

The hem of her skirts whisked across the carpet. She hummed along with the music and wondered what it would feel like to have such strong arms wrapped around her body. The men of her acquaintance were all slender and sensitive.

Perhaps she should expand her acquaintance beyond philosophical societies. The male members were all kind and intelligent, but none of them sent a shiver straight down her spine with merely one glance. Perhaps—

One thick band, hard as iron, wrapped around her waist. One rough hand gripped her own, engulfing it.

Her eyes flew open.

The pair of piercing blue from her imagination met her gaze.

A shiver raced down her spine.

“My lady.” Mr. Brogan Duffy, inquiry agent and the man featured much too prominently in her dreams, inclined his head. “I’ll take this dance.”

Falling in love with Luke is not part of her plan but, to her surprise, Luke is falling for her too. The only thing preventing their happy ever after is Chloe herself. Will she ever truly learn to leave the past where it belongs?

Review:

fourstarsA quick read, I did enjoy Warwick’s Mermaid. I prefer characters with flaws in my romance, and even though there was an attraction between Luke and Chloe, her own past did make for a slow burn in terms of their relationship. The setting was absolutely gorgeous and made me want to go visit North Yorkshire, just to see the beach area. I would certainly look for other books by this author.

Excerpt:

Luke relaxed back in his chair, his body angled towards Chloe, one arm resting casually on the table, the other along the back of his chair. In stark contrast, she was sitting bolt upright, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, and his gaze narrowed thoughtfully as he watched her battling with some emotion. He had been taken by surprise when he saw her walk into the room with Lucie, recognising her instantly as the girl he had been captivated by on the beach below his cliff-top cottage. He remembered how her auburn curls, tumbling down to the base of her spine, had shone brightly in the sunlight as she collected shells along the shore, oblivious to his gaze. And now here she was again; except tonight she was tense and uneasy, whereas on the beach she had seemed relaxed, carefree, and somehow ethereal.

“Red or white?”

She looked up in surprise and Luke smiled faintly, gesturing to the wine bottles sitting on the table.

“Do you drink red or white?”

“Oh, er…white, please.” She briefly met his gaze before adding, “Can’t stand red.”

As he reached forward to pour her a glass, she snapped around to face him. “This isn’t a blind date, is it?”

He favoured her with a curious glance, taking his time with pouring himself a glass of water before settling back into his seat. “I’ve just moved to the area. A friend suggested the ball and put me in touch with Clive, and I couldn’t think of a good reason why not. He mentioned Lucie would be bringing a friend, but in answer to your question, no, I didn’t understand it to be a blind date.”

Chloe nodded and sipped at her wine, clearly unconvinced.

“I gather Lucie has persuaded you here under false pretences?” Aware that this was somehow a big deal for her, he frowned and leant forward. “Look, forget Lucie’s intentions, blind date or otherwise. Even if I hadn’t been invited as part of the group, you would still be sitting next to a stranger. Why don’t we start again as two people who happen to meet up at a ball, safe in the knowledge that, after this evening, we don’t have to see each other ever again if we don’t want to?”

“Luke Warwick.” He reached out his hand, holding her gaze.

After a brief hesitation, she took it, the tension visibly leaving her body as she smiled at him in relief. “Chloe MacGregor.”

Funny and bittersweet, Dana and Alex’s story will have you rooting for them.

Excerpt:

“So, this is what it’s like being on a date with you.” Dana hesitated—caught herself. “This isn’t a date, is it?

Her voice flattened and she took a sip of wine. “Oh, I’m not belittling your gesture, bringing me to this fine establishment. But it isn’t a date because you’re seeing that woman, aren’t you? The one you asked me for advice about.”

Alex fidgeted. Idiot.  Asking Dana how to recognize the signs a woman was interested––what had he been thinking? What could be more awkward? This. This was definitely up there on the list of more awkward moments.

“You’ve always been straight with me,” she said, holding the wine glass in midair.

That little flash of skin whenever she raises her arm.  He picked up his wine glass. At this rate, he’d have to order a second bottle, simply to block his mind from going where it shouldn’t.

“Alex, do it again, be straight.”

He leaned in, took the glass from her hand and put it on the table. “Come closer,” he said. “I want to whisper sweet somethings in your ear.”

She bent toward him, a puzzled but amused expression percolating, her face glowing in the subtle lighting.

“Yes?” Her voice throaty, challenging.

“This is a date,” he said and tilted his head, brushed her lips with his, pulled back slightly, and did it again.
